In Canada, one province is taking the opposite approach. As University of Montreal professor Catherine Piché explained, in Quebec, class-action lawyers can tap into a pool of public money to help fund their cases. The “egalitarian approach,” Piché said, helps make certain trials possible, and funds about a third of the roughly 500 cases filed per year. “Perhaps I’m just an optimist.”
